Blogger Talk: Dyspraxia

All my life, I have had a condition called Dyspraxia. It affects my timing, my balance, I stuggle to remember things in sequence, trouble picking items up and keeping hold of them (this one is great with Lego), and many other things.

When I explain Dyspraxia to other people they think I am making it up because lots of people experience these symptoms. In fact, up until I was diagnosed people just wrote me off as clumsy and careless. That if I dropped something and it broke that was because I didn't really care about not breaking that item.

There are lots of other things too. Little things. I didn't learn to ride a bike until I was almost 11 - I just kept falling off. I couldn't skip until I was about 6 or 7 because Dyspraxia also makes it difficult to perform things in a sequence and skipping involves a series of actions I couldn't comprehend. I also can't hop, ice skate or roller skate. These are things lots of non-dyspraxic people can't do, but when there are all these things together, it means a little more than simply not being good at something.

It also affects attention span - so much so that a lot of people who have dyspraxia also have ADHD. Which, I have too.

Dyspraxia can also affect people socially - I struggle with eye contact (I never know where to look when I am talking to people!) I never know how to behave - I am very flamboyant, energetic and loud, and not everyone has the mental or physical energy to put up with me. It also is linked with anxiety - which is a major problem with me. I can struggle to make and maintain friendships.

I actually started this blog so I would have an outlet for talking about Lego - something I have a deep and special interest in - because I don't know anyone in real life who likes Lego the way I do, and even those that do might not want to hear me talk about it all the time.

Being a Lego fan and being Dyspraxic can be frustrating. On my worst days it is very difficult to pick items up. I have cracked so many bricks because I struggle with my coordination, and accidentally apply more force than was meant.

But is has also given me a wonderful outlet. With art, my supplies are finite and if I make a mistake and glue something in the wrong place, that's it, that resource is gone. However with Lego as long as a brick isn't too badly cracked I can use it again and again.

If you are wondering why I am writing a blog post about this, when it really isn't to do with Lego; I didn't meet another person with Dyspraxia until I was 19. I was embarrassed to tell people about it because it sounds like a condition that isn't a condition. But it is real and it affects me. I have been mocked and ridiculed for the way I act even though I cannot help it.

I was lonely, but I am determined that no one else should feel alone. If you want to talk about anything I have discussed in this post, click on the 'Find Me' tab and send me an email. I will always respond.

Wizarding Wednesday: Five Best Animals of the Wizarding World

1. Dementor
Are you feeling cold? A general sense of doom and gloom? That would be because opening my list is the dementor - J.K. Rolling's personification of her depression the dementors were charged with guarding the wizard prison, Azkaban, until they pledged their allegiance to Voldemort before The second great battle at Hogwarts. After the defeat of Voldemort the did not return to Azkaban.

2. Thestrals
I can't see anything, can you? Thestrals are kind of like the Wizarding World's answer to horses; they draw the carriage that transport Grindlewald and that takes students of Hogwarts from second year on wards to the school from the station the Hogwarts Express lets out on. And, of course, they can only be seen by someone who has witnessed death - at the start of the fourth movie, only Luna and Harry are able to see them.

3. Thunderbird

Not only can they sense danger but as they swoop through the air they can cause storms. It's tail feathers are said to be particularly good for transfiguration, and it is the animal that helps remove the memories of the muggles - sorry - I mean no-majs at the end of the first Fantastic Beasts instalment.

4.Aragog (Acromantula)
Unpleasant even just to look at, I think Ron Weasely was right to be wary of this eight-legged foe. Even with it being immortalised in Lego form with rather cute eyes it is still an imposing presence. The large spider which in the books had venomous fangs, and innumerable children makes it onto the list for making a magical creature out of a normal garden insect, and simultaneously preying on everyone's spider related fears.

5. Niffler
Of course this wouldn't be a list of the best animals in the Wizarding World Theme without everyone's favourite kleptomaniacle platypus like pal. Friend to Newt Scamandar if also sometimes a trying ally they truly add comedic moments and useful plot solutions to the Fantastic Beasts franchise.

Oh My Brick: HOUSEBOAT

So I don't and won't normally make OMB's about themes like Lego Creator because I have a particular interest in the more girly and magical themes. But This set, Riverside Houseboat is amazing and I need it. In my head I am chanting: HOUSEBOAT! HOUSEBOAT! HOUSEBOAT!

Look at this Lego beauty. No one tell me partner because I. Am. In. Love.
LEGO Creator Riverside Houseboat (31093)
Look at this.
LEGO Creator Riverside Houseboat (31093)
Beautiful.
The inside doesn't look that house-ish; it's hard to tell with these pictures. But I can refit the inside it's all good. The only over problem is that the very bottom is 8x16 (I think?) but at it's widest point it's two bricks bigger which makes it two bricks bigger than my river. But as the base is 8x16 as long at my other buildings aren't too close to the water it should be fine.

I love the houseboat.

Princess of the Week: Ariel

This week's chosen princess is:

Ariel!
This Ariel comes from set 41145: Ariel and the Magical Spell. She was the first Ariel Mini Doll I had, and is quite pretty - this one came with the addition of human legs, that work quite nicely with the only torso available with her.

My Top 10 All Time Mini Dolls

Name: Andrea
Theme: Friends
Sub-Theme: Pop Star
Set:  Pop Star Show Stage
Set Number: 411105

I actually bought this Mini Doll individually on Bricklink.com. There are less Andrea Mini Dolls than some of the other girls, and as she is the only brown girl, this is the only elaborate outfit that can be used with other brown dolls.

Name: Livi

Theme: Friends
Sub-Theme: Pop-Star
Set: Pop Star Dressing Room
Set Number: 41104

This is the second mini doll to come from this Theme and Sub-Theme which feels a little like cheating. But the dolls from this range came in beautifully printed outfits taking dolls to a place they hadn't been to before, and maybe haven't been since. They make me think of elaborate dance or ice-skating costume.

Name: Joanna

Theme: Friends
Sub-Theme: N/A
Set: Heartlake Pet Salon
Set Number: 41007

This Mini Doll is just adorable! I remember buying the set she comes from just for her! Her little top is so cute and I think she was the first time I had the platted black hair on a Mini Doll as well. There aren't/Weren't many clothes options for the darker skinned mini dolls from the original line, so the top presented an exciting opportunity for a different outfit. Paired with Andrea's yellow skirt it looks amazing.

Name: Stephanie

Theme: Friends
Sub-Theme: Seasonal
Set: Friends Advent Calendar
Set Number: 41326

This Mini Doll came from my all time favourite Lego Calendar. The beautiful print on the torso and the little pom-poms printed on the boots really give it a Christmas feeling. The minute it gets a little colder post-summer, this is the mini doll outfit I bring out into my town. I remember I loved this so much my partner bless him got me three advent calendars! I am truly lucky.

Name: Skyra

Theme: Elves
Sub-Theme: N/A
Set: Skyra's Mysterious Sky Castle
Set Number: 41078

This set predates when I seriously started collecting Lego by a year. I don't have this Mini Doll - but I wish I did! When people say Lego Elves this is what I envision, grand Elves with crazy cool hair and dresses that I totally won't use with other face and hair parts because it looks like the kind of wedding dress I would have if A) I ever wanted a wedding and B) I won the lottery. Even though I do not own this, it makes the list because the detail and effort that the designers and manufacturers must have put into the hair and the dress warrant recognition.

Name: Fa Mulan

Theme: Disney
Sub-Theme: Princess
Set: Mulan's Training Day
Set Number: 41151

I own this one. It's amazing. I had two distinct Disney phases in my childhood.
1) Cinderella
2) Mulan
These phases consisted of singing the songs from their movie whenever I could. Apparently my hearing was bad even then, because my Mama definitely heard me singing "Sing Glue Nighting Gale" and even now all these years later, doesn't let me forget it. Mulan made the biggest impression on me though - she was fierce and though and could protect herself - thing I too wanted to be able to do. Anyway, character and childhood aside, when I found out she was going to be a Mini Doll she could have been in the dullest set ever and I still would have saved up and gotten it. Luckily the set was a solid 7/10 loosing points on a foal that IS NOT KHAN that I have talked about at least twice on this blog somewhere. In short Mulan cool, Mulan make list.

Name: Andrea
Theme: Friends
Sub-Theme: N/A
Set:Andrea's Park Performance
Set Number:41334

This lovely Andrea doll comes from the reboot we got in 2018. I have to say the reboot meant a definite departure from the traditional cutsie pattern-oriented designs and onto more cohesive outfits where the top and bottom parts have a clear cohesive design like with this one where Andrea has gold on her shoes and her shirt. This is Andrea's second appearance on this list - I definitely have a sweet spot for her.

Name: Cinderella
Theme:Disney
Sub-Theme:Princess
Set:Cinderella's Enchanted Evening
Set Number:41146

Ever since I was a little girl, Cinderella has been the princess. She has the dresses the songs and the strong mentality. She doesn't wait for the prince to save her - he just so happens to be a bi-product of her efforts to stand up for herself. The cartoon was magical, and the 2015 live-action adaptation that came out while I was still in my teen years added more and more magic. The full skirt of this Mini Doll - which i believe was introduced with this set - really captures the decadent magical whimsyness of Cinderella's ball gown. It is a must have for any Lego Disney collector.

Name:Emily Jones
Theme:Elves
Sub-Theme:N/A
Set: Aira's Airship and the Amulet Chase
Set Number:41184

I have always liked the Jones girls from the Lego Elves franchise. They always have these cute but simple clothes designs. I love what this particular Mini Doll has on - a shoulder-less striped tee with a pink vest underneath, matching grey skirt and leggings with converse-style shoes. Classic, yet contemporary. Not to mention the cute print on the face that really sets her apart from the Friends dolls and makes her unique and memorable.

Name: Andrea
Theme: Friends
Sub-Theme: N/A
Set:Andrea's Accessories Store
Set Number: 41344
So I definitely have a love for Andrea. It seems consistently while she has maybe the smallest number of appearances in sets, she has the best ones. I mean the accessory store? AMAZING. The bedroom set we had in 2018 for Andrea was easily the best with that amazing bed/mirror build. Time and time again she has the best builds for the personality the creators of Lego Friends have given her. This Mini Doll is no different - she has a lovely dark skirt with a metallic denim-style jacket with a cute pink leopard-print shirt. Very fashionable.

Wizard Wednesday: Hogwarts House Sorting

Image result for wizarding world lego logo
So I am OBSESSED with Harry Potter and the related Wizarding World. Hermione Granger was one of the first Mini Figures I ever had and the only human female (this is a story for another time). I have drawn up a list of students currently available in Lego form, and their houses so I can see the most and least represented houses. I was not particularly surprised with my results.

   Gryffindor

   Hufflepuff

   Ravenclaw

     Slytherin

 Harry Potter
 - Uniform
 - Casual
 - Quidditch
 Susan Bones
 - Uniform
 Luna Lovegood
 - Casual
 Draco Malfoy
 - Uniform

 Hermione Granger

 Cedric Diggory
 - Champion
 Cho Chang

 Lucian Bole
 - Quidditch
 Ron Weasley
 - Uniform
 - Casual

 Marcus Flint
 - Quidditch
 Neville Longbottom
- Other

 Seamus Finnigan
 - Uniform

 Dean Thomas
 - Uniform

 Oliver Wood
 - Quidditch

I am getting this information from Mini Figures from the following sets:
-75950: Aragog's Lair
-75953: Hogwarts Whomping Willow
-75954: Hogwarts Great Hall
-75955: Hogwarts Express
-75956: Quiddich Match
-71022: LEGO Minifigures - Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts Series 1

As you can see, predictably the most represented house is Gryffindor, which is not surprising as they are the 'good' house. Coming in second is Slytherin, the 'bad' house, with the other two - Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff - tied for last. There are definitely characters I would like to see that as of yet, are not Mini Figures in this revival of Harry Potter Lego (I am not counting or including older releases, as I do not want to pay an arm or a leg to get a Mini Figure off of a collector!) I might do a wish-list of figures I would like to see coming in the next wave.
