2018: This Year In Lego

Welcome to the Annual Lego breakdown. Everything that happened this year, in concise bullet points.

Things of note:
The brick turned 60 years old
The Mini Figure turned 40 years old
Lego introduces the use of plant-based plastic that is more eco-friendly in it's plant componants.
A new six-leaf flower component is introduced, replacing the older four flowers on a plastic bit.
A new leaf component is introduced, featuring three leaves coming off of a single stud.

In Lego Disney:
The first Mulan Mini Doll was released, as part of 41151: Mulan's Training Day.
The Build-and-Swap idea that interlinks all of this years sets is introduced, you can now swap with ease everything from furniture to whole rooms.

In Lego Jurassic World:

Over the summer two issues of a special magazine each containing Mini Builds dedicated to this theme are released in the UK.

In Lego Elves:
This is the last year there are active releases for this theme.
This is the first year there are no summer special magazines containing mini builds, from this theme.

In Lego Friends:
This franchise is rebooted. Changed include the darkening of Olivia giving her a medium skin tone not previously available in Mini Dolls. Olivia and Andrea have different hair styles. Emma and Andrea have go from having blue and green eyes respectively to both having brown.
A racing sub-theme is introduced in the summer wave.

In Collectable Mini Figures:
The 18th season of the Collectable Mini Figures are released, with a party theme in reference to the anniversary of the brick and the Mini Figure.
A new balloon animal mold is introduced in this series - a transparent pink and green one come with a clown Mini Figure.
A New Balloon mold is introduced that features a balloon on a white stick with a handle making an L shape. This item is not well suited to Mini Dolls
The Mini Figure with the smallest distribution ratio is a "classic policeman" based off an early Mini Figure. For every box of 60 packets, just 1 is the policeman.
The Wizarding World Collectable Mini Figure series is introduced.

In Lego Brickheads:

Images of tweets circulate that appear to confirm that Lego is dialling back the distribution of this range, but not altogether discontinuing.

In Lego Wizarding World
This theme makes it's debut, with 2 from the newer Fantastic Beasts franchise and 5 from the Harry Potter series, with a focus on the earlier years.
A collectable Mini Figure series is available from August 1st including figurines from both franchises.
A pack of four Mini Figure pack for Bricktober is released exclusive to Toys'R'Us which only exists in Germany after it went into administration in multiple other countries. It is very difficult to get a hold of.

In Lego Powerpuff Girls:
Two sets are released under this theme in a relatively small run.
If you were to get both between them you would have all three girls, Mojo Jojo and Princess Morbucks.

In Lego Unikitty:
This theme is introduced.
A collectable blind bag line is introduced: they are not technically Mini Figures because Unikitty is brick built.
It features various versions of Unikitty and Puppycorn.
This is an unusual one because due to the lack of accessories, there is no way to tell what exact character design you have - the only real difference is between Unikitty and Puppycorn who also appears in almost equal measure.

Princess of the Week: Merida

This weeks princess is...
Merida! From the Pixar animated movie Brave, this Mini Doll comes from 41051 : Merida's Highland Games, released in 2014. Unfortunately this set is no longer available but if like me it's something you have your sights on it can be purchased from eBay for almost twice the RRP (Around £30) so not the best not the worst. When complete this set comes with three little bear brothers.

Wizard Wednesday: How To Make a Lego Love Potion

The Love Potion. A very important plot point in the Harry Potter series - The reason Volemort can't understand or feel love, after being born out of the affects of this potion. Today we are going to attempt to make a potion Horace Slughorn called the most dangerous potion. I got the ingredients from here. Today's potion class is headed by Luna Lovegood and Windflower the raccoon

First, the instructions call of Ashwinder Eggs - Take it away Luna!

All good, Luna has added the eggs. Next, Rose thorns. Ooh how dreamy! Luna lovely you know what to do!
Next peppermint.. Will these swirly treats do?
Wouldn't be a Love Potion without powdered moonstone!
And last but not least, Pearl Dust!
Ahh but it wouldn't be a potion without a wave of a want to marry the ingredients together!

It's now turned that wild in-love pink! Good job Luna!

 And now to bottle it!
Isn't this a perfect brew? Well done to Luna and Windflower! Check back next Wednesday for Wizard Wednesday

Wizard Wednesday: The Best of the Collectable Mini Figures

This week for Wizard Wednesday I present the best of the collectable Mini Figures Wizarding World Series. As always, this list is subjective. But these Mini Figures are here because I think they are neat.

Newt Scamander

So Newt of the new-ish Fantastic Beasts franchise is AMAZING. First of, his character is endearing and adorable, his awkwardness is very relatable. Another lovable feature of this Mini Figure is the Niffler! I just want to fill my whole Lego town with Nifflers they are so, so cute! Not to mention the fact that newt is sporting the new briefcase utensil and a cute little Pickett print on his lapel.

Sybil Trelawney

Whats not to love? The quirkiness of everyone's favourite Divination professor is captured brilliantly in this Mini Figure complete with that beautiful new skirt mold and the tea cup! The printed design on the saucer really is a nice touch that proved Lego wants to go that little bit further to bring the magic of the harry potter world to Lego form.

Dean Thomas

With his cute little scarf and house-pride evident in his little Gryffindor flag he is a must have. If you have 75953: Hogwarts Wamping Willow and 75954: Hogwarts Great Hall he is an excellant addition.

Luna Lovegood

Who doesn't love Luna? This charming Mini Figure comes with an exquisite B Print allowing Luna to roam the realms of Lego with those little printed glasses to look for Nargles. If she gets bored, she comes with a copy of the Quibbler for her to read away the hours. The eccentricity and loveliness of Luna is captured perfectly.

Neville Longbottom

Everyones favourite geeky and shy Gryffindor is on the list! His cute outfit reflecting his love of his herbology, you best hope his mufflers are on tight because we don't want him fainting when he pulls the mandrake out of the pot!

Harry Potter

This wouldn't be a list about Harry Potter Lego without the boy wizard himself! Harry is neatly represented here in his little striped pyjamas from the first movie's Christmas scene and his invisibility cloak. I think Lego has done a really good job in making the impossible happen - how do you make a piece you're not meant to see? With the beautiful pattern similar to the one the first movie shows the cloak to have when it is not worn, and a holographic pattern that would make Youtube's simplynailogical pleased, this entry is a delight.

Princess of the Week: Mulan

This week's princess is: Mulan!

Who doesn't love the hero who saved China? The set she came in (41151: Mulan's Training Day) was good value and rather quite cute! You will find her in my top Disney Lego sets list in at number 6 for more details and my thoughts on the set she came in! I know she isn't *technically* a Princess but 1) she comes from the Lego Disney princess line and 2) I love her so she is a princess in my heart.
